OraVerse Local Anesthesia Reversal Agent

OraVerse (generic name phentolamine mesylate) is a product designed to reduce the length of time the dental patient experiences numbness following  dental procedures. A trip to the dentist’s office for restorative or periodontal procedure often means a long period of up to four hours  of numbness  due to the administering of an injected anesthetic. Patients often have trouble speaking or drinking fluids and may suffer from inadvertent drooling because of continued numbness. OraVerse can correct this problem by reducing the period of numbness that follows the dental procedure.

In studies where OraVerse was administered, patients reported a return of sensation in as little as 15 minutes with  full lip sensation returning in less than one hour. Numbness disappeared in both the upper and lower jaw during the same time period. This research indicates that in almost all cases, patients can speak coherently, their smile returns to normal, and drooling is minimized much sooner than if OraVerse is not administered. This is of great importance to those who must return to work following a dental appointment.

OraVerse is administered by injection, exactly like the anesthetic that was used at the start of the dental procedure. While most patients do not feel the injection of OraVerse, some patients may  experience pain during the injection. A small group of patients have reported headache and increased or decreased heart rate.

OraVerse is intended for adults and children age 6 and above; it is not recommended for children weighing less than 33 lbs. There are no known drug interactions associated with OraVerse.

OraVerse comes in small cartridges that contain only 0.4 mg of phentolamine mesylate in 1.7 mL of solution. Recommended dosage is 1/2 cartridge for children age 6 to 11 who weigh less than 66 lbs., 1 cartridge for children age 6-11 weighing over 66 lbs., and 2 cartridges for persons over 12 years of age.
