Tooth Whitening Options
Today
tooth whitening can be safely performed in the dental office or with
dentist-supervised at-home whitening systems. The main differences in
these systems are the length of treatment time and the cost of
treatment.
The in-office systems include laser whitening and visible-light-assisted
whitening. The primary advantages to in-office whitening are that these
methods lighten teeth instantly and that it is easier to control or
eliminate tooth sensitivity during the treatment process. Occasionally
your dentist may recommend additional follow-up treatment in the office
or with at-home gels to achieve the whitest result.
Favorable whitening results may also be obtained through
dentist-supervised at-home bleaching. This type of whitening treatment
is generally less expensive, but the results take longer to achieve and
there is a higher incidence of tooth sensitivity during treatment. Most
take-home whitening systems work in 10 to 14 days with daily wear of a
whitening tray containing a whitening gel. Depending on the level of
initial discoloration, it may take longer (up to 6 months) to achieve
the desired whiteness.
Tooth whitening will not lighten fillings or artificial materials used
in dental restorations such as crowns, porcelain veneers, and bonding.
It will also not whiten exposed root surfaces. That’s why we recommend a
thorough dental evaluation by your dentist prior to beginning any
whitening process. That way you’ll know exactly what to expect when the
whitening treatment is complete, and you’ll be prepared to replace any
older restorations that will not match your new brighter smile.
